Ms. Nell den Heyer (Ph.D. Student, Dalhousie University)

My research is on the movement and dispersal of lobster in the Northumberland Strait. With the help of commercial fishermen, I have used experimental traps, mark and recapture tagging and radio-acoustic telemetry to study seasonal movement and foraging behaviour. This project arose out of concerns of fishermen and the fish processing industry about the lobster catch in the
Northumberland Strait. Collaborative research, such as this, demonstrates the commitment of all partners to the future of the fishery, helps to develop a common understanding of the lobster resource and focuses both resources and expertise.
