Mary received her B.Sc. from the University of Kings College, Halifax in 1976 and started to work at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography as a summer student in Biological Oceanography. She became a fulltime biologist in 1978 assisting in research projects that were primarily centered on acoustics, species diversity and vertical distribution of zooplankton off the Scotian Shelf and in the Canadian Arctic. In 1992, Mary completed her M.Sc in Biological Oceanography from Dalhousie University. The topic for her thesis was “Community structure of fish larvae in the eastern tropical Pacific”.
Currently Mary is a data manager for BioChem (DFO’s national archive for plankton and chemistry data at MEDS) and is in charge of maintaining the taxonomic code table. This involves collaboration with ITIS. In addition, Mary is involved in creating procedures to share data collections archived in BioChem with OBIS Canada and CMB. Mary is the Canadian representative on the IODE group of experts on Biological and Chemical Data Management and Exchange Practices. In addition she is a member of the CMB Technical Committee.
