Kent Russell completed his Honours Degree in Marine Biology at Dalhousie University in 2004. His thesis looked at the diet of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) on the Western Bank. The stomach analysis of the aforementioned species was conducted at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography under the guidance of his Honour's supervisor, Dr. Ellen Kenchington. In addition to his studies, Kent was also a teaching assistant in Physiology of Marine Animals at Dalhousie University during the 2003/2004 school year.
