Dr. Bruce G. Hatcher, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Bruce Hatcher is Cape Breton University’s Chair in Marine Ecosystem Research, and Director of the revitalized Bras d’Or Institute at the University.  Prior to this appointment he was a Professor of Biology and the Director of the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University.  Bruce has worked for the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, the Canadian International Development Agency, and as Vice-President of an environmental consulting company.

Educated as a benthic ecologist and oceanographer in the United States, Canada and Australia, he has 25 years post-doctoral experience in marine science and as a leader of a wide variety of grant and contract-funded research and development projects world-wide. His primary expertise lies in the application of ecological theory, empirical analyses and quantitative modeling to the better understanding and prediction of marine ecosystem function. He currently focuses on the use of synoptic ecological tools (e.g. remote sensing, numerical modeling) for management decision support in coastal ecosystems.

Bruce’s secondary expertise lies in building capacity for research and development in universities and the public and private sectors of both the developing and over-developed world. He has trained 60 graduate students at five Universities in four countries, and consults for the African Development Bank, United Nations Development Program and World Bank.

Bruce has published more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, prepared in excess of 40 technical assessments and advisory reports for government and business clients, and secured over $5.9M in research grant and contract funding. He edited the Springer journal Coral Reefs from 1997 to 2005, was accredited as a Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America in 2002, and chaired the Marine Environmental Task Force of the US National Academies’ Transportation Research Board from 2004 to 2006. No “arm-chair ecologist”, Bruce has worked in 25 countries and six seas, logging more than 600 days at sea and 1,600 hours working underwater.

He is married to an Oceanographer (Dr. Annamarie Hatcher) and has three sons.
