OBIS - Ocean Biogeographic Information System
Hi, in this tour, you are shown how to search OBIS by common name. Start at www.iobis.org, by clicking in the 'Search By Name' text box, then typing a common name and clicking the 'Search' button. Wait for the scientific name list and select the desired species. Wait for the 'Species Information' page, view the species extent map and click the Text button to get actual data. As well there are links to other information sources, such as: ITIS for taxonomy and nomenclature and to Google Images for snapshots. You also have links to meta data, that is information about the data, including: formal citation, abstract, contact emails and links to related sites. Finally there is the ACON mapper, featuring dynamic drill down mapping. Wait for the global map, click on the desired location, and zoom In. That's it, thanks for taking the tour.
Hi, in this tour, you are shown how to search OBIS by geographical area in terms of simple bounding box. Start at www.iobis.org, and then click at the point of interest on the Google Map. A small red box will appear. Zoom to the box by clicking the map slider and adjusting the size of the search area, in this case 5 degrees. Click the Search button to obtain a list of species in the selected area. Sort the list using the radio buttons at the top of the list. The higher taxon button will return a list summarized by major taxonomic group. Click the view search results button to get a list for a particular group. Clicking the name on the list will counts and distributions for the selected taxa in the selected area. That's it, thanks for taking the tour. See the 'OBIS - Selecting by common name' tour for what can be done after selecting a particular name on the list.
