Dr. Andrea Locke

Dr. Andrea Locke is a Research Scientist at the Gulf Fisheries Centre with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Moncton , New Brunswick . Dr. Locke obtained her degrees from the University of Guelph (B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Marine Biology) and University of Toronto (Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology). At that time, her research was primarily involved with population and community ecology of zooplankton, especially the biotic and abiotic factors structuring communities and the resilience of communities to disturbance. Postdoctoral work on ballast water transport of zooplankton developed into an interest in invasive species that is now a major research focus. Dr. Locke joined the diadromous fish group at DFO in 1992, working on a variety of subjects including ichthyoplankton ecology in estuaries; the impact of the Petitcodiac causeway on the diversity of fishes, invertebrates, and plants; and the population ecology and stock assessment of Atlantic salmon in northern New Brunswick. Following a transfer to the environmental sciences group in 1998, she has worked on studies of early succession on artificial reefs; the community ecology of eelgrass habitats; developing indices of biotic integrity for estuaries; etc. For several years, her main research focus has been on invasive species in Atlantic Canada, especially in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence . Current projects involve synoptic surveys and experimental studies on ecosystem impacts of green crab, clubbed tunicate and Codium; studies to quantify vectors of dispersal; development of a risk assessment model for ballast water and other vectors in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence; and operation of an invasive species hotline (1-866-759-6600).
