Ms. Allison Schmidt (BScHon, Graduate student, MSc Marine Ecology, Dalhousie University)

>Miss. Schmidt is currently working on the effects of native kelp ( Laminaria spp.) and the invasive green alga ( Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides ) on habitat structure and biotic assemblages in the rocky subtidal zone of Nova Scotia. Kelp beds provide a structurally complex habitat for diverse communities of benthic invertebrates and demersal fish, and are the base of food webs that support important fisheries. Over the past decade, however, these be! ds have progressively been replaced by meadows of the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp . tomentosoides .  She will be comparing the influence of Laminaria and Codium canopies on light penetration, water flow, habitat architecture and faunal assemblages between stands of each macroalgal species at a moderately exposed site near Halifax .
