Improved search and retrieval of ocean biodiversity information through NASA's Global Change Master Directory'; Melanie F. Meaux - USA
To improve the search for marine and non-marine species around the world, NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD, http://gcmd.nasa.gov/) science keyword hierarchy has been extended, and a new Science Topic called "Biological Classification" has been added. Users may now navigate a five-level hierarchy of keywords within the directory's redesigned web site for more precise results. This added functionality arose from collaborations with representatives of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS, http://www.iobis.org) and resulted in the implementation of the OBIS taxonomic categories. The Biological Classification keywords were further extended based on ITIS, Species 2000, and GBIF taxonomic sources. The new functionality will illustrate the improved search and retrieval of ocean biodiversity information. The GCMD OBIS portal (i.e., a customized virtual subset of the directory) will also be demonstrated. Additional features will be presented such as an improved metadata display and new functionalities within the metadata authoring tools.
