The West Coast Vancouver Island (WCVI) "shrimp" survey was implemented in 1972 and now serves as one of the longest continuous time series in existence for fish species on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Basic data collected have remained constant but changes in technology with respect to vessels, fishing gear and data capture have occurred. These present challenges when interpreting, analyzing, and documenting data. Initiatives such as species as risk, ecosystem assessment and posting for internet access have resulted in additional demands for the use of this dataset. The need for detailed documentation of this dataset, including details of changes over time, is required and is presented here. Capturing this time series information in a metadata format is essential.
