'The Gulf of Maine's Biodiversity Discovery Corridor'; Kenchington, E. - Canada
The Discovery Corridor cuts across the ocean from the shallow waters along the coast of Maine and New Brunswick out across the continental shelf to the deep waters of the abyssal plain. The area includes many bottom types (sand, bedrock) and oceanic features (basins, banks, slopes, seamounts). Scientists are using the corridor to study marine life in and on the sediments and in the water column of this Hidden Realm. Already a biodiversity hot spot has been found at Jordan Basin (left panel) and the distribution of deepwater corals and other species has been extended in the Northeast Channel (right panel).
