Workshop to Develop a Revised Strategy for Geospatial Searching for the New Integrated ACZISC/COINAtlantic Web Site

A 1/2 day workshop to: > review COINAtlantic progress to date; > consider the present status of approaches to metadata management; and, > look at existing Google search capabilities. The outcome of the workshop will be a recommended strategy to guide future development of COINAtlantic geospatial searches.

ACZISC Workshop to Develop a COINAtlantic

Strategy for Geospatial Searching

0900 – 1200 hrs, Wednesday, 21 April 2010

George Needler Boardroom, Bedford Institute of Oceanography

In recent years, with support from GeoConnections and other ACZISC member agencies, the ACZISC has made significant progress in establishing a coastal and ocean information network, COINAtlantic, to facilitate access to maps and other geospatial information in support of ICOM.

The geospatial search utility developed for COINAtlantic will be an important component of the new integrated ACZISC/COINAtlantic website, being developed as per the recommendations of ACZISC members. Recent developments are impacting on the COINAtlantic Search Utility (http://coinatlantic.ca). These include:

•         a new version of the GeoConnections Discovery Portal (GDP);

•         acceptance of a federal standard on geospatial data; and,

•         additional development of Google and GoogleMaps.

The ACZISC will host a half-day workshop on Wednesday, 21 April 2010 from 0900 to noon in the George Needler Boardroom at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, NS. The purpose of the Workshop is to review the present state of geospatial search components, including:

•         existing metadata standards;

•         the present state of online metadata;

•         online WMS/WFS/KML geospatial information; and,

•         a developmental geospatial search utility built on the Google search engine.

Background materials for the Workshop are available at:

http://www.marinebiodiversity.ca/COINAtlantic/events/coinatlantic-workshop-to-develop-a-strategy-for-geospatial-searching.

The outcome of the Workshop will be a recommended strategy for future development of the COINAtlantic geospatial search utility. The strategy will build on existing standards and experience and will identify:

•         appropriate metadata standards and management approaches; and,

•         appropriate geospatial search application(s).

Your participation in the Workshop will be essential to determining the future development of the new integrated ACZISC/COINAtlantic website.
