Event Workshop on Geospatial risk characterization II (Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, from Feb 24, 2010 09:10 AM to Feb 26, 2010 05:10 PM)
A workshop, co-chaired by Fisheries and Oceans Canada - the Centre of Expertise on Coastal Management in conjunction with the Ocean Industry and Socio-economic Division, HQ (Ottawa) - and the Canadian Water Network: Watersheds Research Consortium, will take place at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography on February 24-26, 2010. This event will be organized in collaboration with the Maritimes Region's Oceans and Coastal Management Division and the Gulf Region's Oceans and Habitat Division. The purpose of this workshop is to provide support to decision-makers in effective planning and management through a technical validation of a number of tools for ecosystem-based approaches in the coastal zone. Specifically, the intent of the workshop is to validate geospatial characterization tools and analysis methodologies which are being developed in order to identify significant ecosystem components and their vulnerabilities. The workshop will serve to bridge elements of ecological as well as the socio-economic and cultural components which are being considered in the context of ecosystem-based risk analysis approaches and priority setting exercises. Furthermore, a full day will be dedicated in discussing the appropriate scope and selection of indicators which are useful for triggering management actions. These include tiered indicators such as proxies, indirect effects, environmental impacts as well as related thresholds for key ecosystem components. The discussions will also be made in the context of supporting cumulative impacts assessments with vulnerability profiles and forecasting the needs and priorities for risk assessments and monitoring. Finally, approaches used to validate ecological vulnerability could assist the development of similar processes to profile the socio-economic and cultural vulnerability valuation. This type of profile will help enable decision makers to identify the ecosystem goods and services at risk.
