Information on SNEI
Communique to CHONe Community
We are delighted to report that CHONe was successful in its bid for funding under NSERC’s Strategic Network Enhancement Initiative. We have been awarded $581,000 to fund multiple initiatives over a 3-year period in 2 strategic areas: tools for ocean observation and prediction and policy implementation. Please note that we identified a series of potential partner projects in the proposal and cannot add new project partners at this stage. Nonetheless, there is some flexibility within some of the identified projects that may be able to accommodate a wide variety of potential activities. Websites for proposed project partners are listed below.
Phase 1 (2010-2012) of the SNEI program will focus on student training and tool enhancement through a combined strategy of lab internships, training workshops and exchanges of invited speakers. Phase 2 (2010-2012) will work in parallel with Phase 1 and focus on tool delivery to partners in Canada and elsewhere. Phase 3 (2010-2013) will move tools from development into policy application by working with projects and policy groups internationally to learn how they translate research into policy implementation.
The student training component of the SNEI program will enable 96 of our students to participate in workshop/ mini-courses and 29 lab exchanges with international partner organizations. The PI networking component will cover the cost of about 40 trips for CHONe researchers to meet with counterparts in partner organizations for the exchange of ideas and findings on their research and participation in policy meetings. An Oceans 2020 Vision Dialogue meeting in 2013 will bring together international scientists and stakeholders to discuss CHONe research findings and solutions for the future of ocean health in Canada. SNEI funds will support the participation of 14 students and 10 PIs at this meeting.
Rounding out the SNEI program will be a visiting lectureship involving several international experts travelling to Canada to deliver talks at key CHONe cluster locations and at CHONe Network Meetings.
