Paul is the Director of the Canadian Healthy Oceans Network and Chairs its Scientific Steering Committee, and is an Associate Professor at Memorial University. He has held a Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Oceans Systems since 2002 at the Ocean Sciences Centre and has a joint appointment in the Biology Department. From 1996-2003 he held an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Fisheries Conservation. Prior to that, he was a Killam postdoctoral fellow at Dalhousie University and also at Rutgers University after completing a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, an MSc at McGill University, and a BSc Hons at Memorial University. He is also active with the Census of Marine Life where he is overseeing the synthesis phase of the 10-year international program that culminates in 2010. He sits on the editorial boards of five international journals and has published over 50 peer reviewed papers along with another 40 book chapters and published reports. His principal research areas include ecology of seafloor communities, larval dynamics of fish and invertebrates, and studies of marine biodiversity.
