Prof. Serge Demers is an internationally recognized biological oceanographer specialized in phytoplankton ecophysiology. He has a solid expertise in the study of the physiology and the ecology of marine phytoplankton. His expertise is mainly in particles analysis, interpretation of time series and in the study of hydrodynamics and planktonic communities. He is author or co-author of more than 95 scientific papers published in internationally recognized journals and he edited 3 books. He has been involved in many national and international research programs such as JGOFS (Joint global Ocean fluxes study), NOW (North water Polynya project) and CASES (Canadian arctic shelf exchange study). During  the last 25 years, it took part and directed several oceanographic  expeditions in the estuary and the gulf of St. Lawrence, the Hudson Bay, the Canadian Arctic and various oceanic and coastal environments in the world. He worked more than 12 years as scientific researcher for the Department of fisheries and Oceans at the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute and 6 years as professor at INRS-Océanologie before contributing actively to the creation of the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER). He is director of ISMER since 1999. This institute regroups more than 21 researchers of various disciplines, 20 employees to support research activities, 4 administrative persons and more than 80 students of 2nd and 3rd cycles.
