John Nightingale, Ph.D. is president of the Vancouver Aquarium and one of the most well-known and respected leaders in aquarium operations and management in North America. His work at the renowned Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre has helped to maintain the Aquarium's legendary status as one of the world's most revered aquatic institutions. Nightingale joined the Vancouver Aquarium in 1993, and since that time he has guided the expansion of the Aquarium's leadership in conservation research. A professional biologist and bio-engineer with "hands-on" experience, John has led the management and development of other institutions including the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Maui Ocean Center and has maintained existing facilities such as the New York and Seattle Aquariums. His educational background includes a MS degree in fisheries biology and PhD in physiology from the University of Washington. He has also completed post-graduate studies in business administration at Seattle University.
His background and lifelong work in formal and informal public education make John a leader in the current rapid development of new educational efforts in establishing interfaces between marine science and the public. John applies nearly 25 years of experience and education in the industry to his current role on the CHONe Board of Directors. This experience includes developing strategic and physical plans for new and existing institutions, managing all aspects of aquarium development and operation, and creation of effective communication strategies and networks.
