The taxonomic names are based on three resources. Marine algae, with the exception of dinoflagellates, diatoms, and blue-green algae, are based on "NEA keys to Benthic Marine Algae of the Northeastern Coast of North America from Long Island Sound to the Strait of BelleIsle, 2nd edition (1998)". The invetebrates, shore birds, marine mammals, dinoflagellates and diatoms are based on the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) website. The fish are based on the website FishBase. Generally, higher taxa beginning at the class level are listed in phylogenetic order. However, orders, families and genera are listed alphabetically within a given taxon, mostly because of reasons related to simplification, uncertain phylogenetic status or large number of taxa.
